Love Theme in the Short Story – “The Diamond Mine”

The Diamond Mine is a love story involving a handsome soldier and friend of the family, who is about to be deployed to the North African battlefield. The next main character is a young female by the name of Tilla, a sixteen year old female from South Africa. The author’s intention in this short story is to show how love develops between two individuals, male and female. In this story, Tilla and the soldier gradually became involved with each other on a social basis during his visits on the weekends. As a result, their relationship grew into one of intimacy. The general message from the story is that love between two young people may turn on different aspects of life, which will eventually involve the participation of the parent.

The parents became more involved in the story when the soldier could not visit one weekend and they drove Tilla to the camp to find him and have dinner. Using their petrol ration coupons indicates there is affection for the soldier. The deeper meaning in this story is that love can go beyond a certain stage of expectancy when the parties are intimately involved and their feelings for each other is growing. For example, Tilla and the soldier became sexually engaged in the backseat of her parent’s car while her father was trying to relate the significance of the Diamond Mine to them. His words probably went into one ear and out the other if even that far, because love was on Tilla and the soldier’s minds.

The theme in this story was created by a combination of the plot and the characters. The playful nature of the characters as they stroll through the street from street light to street light and under the trees, setting the stage for a love story. The discovery by Tilla that a man has breast too, furthered the plot for the theme of love. Steadying her while she hopped on one leg and the breath against the hollow of her neck, where the pendulum of heartbeats could be felt, are all telltale signs permeating love.

The setting in the back seat of the car with a blanket over their legs enhances the theme of love by the wondering nature of their hands. The subsequent kissing and ensuing intimate activities in the back seat of the car, spells love for both Tilla and her soldier friend. The thought that “love is blind” is certainty a theme in this short story.

The theme of love was selected based on my experience with other soldiers during basic training at different military posts. This reminds me of the many war stories I have heard from soldiers who have fallen in love with females in the local area, and how a love story developed during their continued visits before deployment. The ending of such relationships find some of these soldiers returning to the local areas and becoming bridegrooms. On the other hand, some of the females followed their deployed soldiers to their next base and became brides. Hopefully, Tilla and her soldier friend will see each other again for a happier ending.

A Love Story in Florida

A couple in Dania Beach Florida celebrates 70 (yes, seventy) years of wedded bliss this coming August 17th. Magazzu & Leto have been a couple since 1939. When they first met, the New York World’s Fair was in full swing, Hitler had just invaded Poland, and gasoline was 17 cents a gallon.

“We’re not going to have a party,” said Magazzu, 97, insisting they’re too old for such things. “Oh yes we are,” responded Leto, 96, who noted the two can still polka. “This is a big one.”

A big one indeed, particularly since the two have kept a secret between them for nearly all those seventy years. When they met, in New York, Magazzu was a former Army medic and teacher, and Leto was a telegraph operator. It was one of those love at first sight kinds of things. Before they knew it they were madly in love, and sharing a flat in Manhattan where they lived together for almost fifty years. There were the usual ups and downs, of course–career disappointments, health issues, an adoption–not a child, but a pet monkey named Chi Chi. Life in New York City has many advantages, not least of which is the ability to live anonymously in one of the most congested places on earth. Magazzu and Leto were able to come and go unquestioned, and virtually unknown by neighbors and colleagues.

We never know what goes on in the lives of people around us. Few of us even know our next door neighbors: their names, occupations, kids’ names, spouses etc. But the unknowns can turn us around, and astonish us, too. They can make us realize that most of the time we don’t even know ourselves all that well. Greek philosopher Hermes’ said in Kybalion that “all truths are but half truths–all paradoxes may be reconciled”. In other words, what I say is always different from the way you hear me say it. And some members of our society, those living with fearful secrets, hear what we say–when our racial, ethnic, or other deprecations, comments about Jews, blacks, gays, lesbians find their way into our conversation and we don’t know the hurt they can cause. We propel ourselves through life never understanding the simple realities that stand directly in front of us, the half-truths that are realities for other people.

Magazzu and Leto lived this reality every day for nearly seven decades. Hiding their secret, changing the subject, avoiding situations that could expose them to real danger. The world was an unforgiving place in 1939; it’s not much more accepting now. Their friends and acquaintances in the tight-knit little community took care of each other, tended to one another, even developed a certain language that only they knew and understood, a jargon to keep themselves safe. This society of outcasts built a rapport with those two lovers, forming a community that evolved with more cohesion and acceptance than any found in the safe, mainstream society.

Magazzu and Leto endured, their true love affair a testament to others like theirs. And they watched their compatriots endure the same harassment, judgment and criticism, only because they’d fallen in love with each other all those years ago, and, though it was forbidden, their love, like any between two human beings, was not to be denied.

This segment of our society still stands in the shadows, fearful, cautious, watching what they say, what they do, ever afraid to exhibit their feelings in public in this the land of the free. They work alongside us, pay their bills, pay their taxes, educate their kids, worship in the pew across the aisle from us each Sunday, or Saturday at Shul, or even at the Mizzen call. They’re our teachers, police, clerks, lawyers, doctors, mail carriers, firefighters, sports heroes, TV personalities, even the fellow who plays the lady killer in all those big screen romantic epics.

Call them first class taxpayers, and second class citizens. These people are only now finding their true voice, their cause just beginning to make headlines and cause minds and hearts to either open, or turn away in harsh dismissal. But they will not be denied, because what they’re asking for is not an outrageous personal right or benefit, nor is it some kind of separate distinction and consideration, no reparations for past wrongs, regardless of how egregious those harms may have been. No, they’re asking only for what the rest of us take for granted each and every day. To enjoy the stated rights every citizen has in these United States of America.

Caroline Leto and Venera Magazzu are old now. They’ve lived together as a couple, in love, for seven decades. They’re not freaks, or bizarre old people, nor are they diseased in some way. Nor are they sinners. If their love is a sin, we need more transgression like theirs. No, Caroline and Venera are just two old lesbian women who happened to fall in love in 1939, and, unlike a lot of their heterosexual friends and family members, they stuck it out. We should say good for them. Here’s a suggestion, Florida, are you ready? I say the state issues them a marriage license. Do it today.

A Vampire Love Story

I have lived for a very long time. Immortality is not always forever, but for me it has lasted for many centuries.

During this time I have acquainted myself with the kind of loneliness that a mortal could never understand. I have seen years pass by in the way that others measure days… hours… I am alone, not only as a person, but as an entire society. The world I came from is long gone. Every world I have ever known is gone.

Then I found a ray of sunlight. The year was 1982 and I was haunting the gritty streets of Manhattan. It was summer, and the city was alive with the smell of people melting under the heat.

She was a sweet young thing. I occasionally dabble with the emotions of mortals for my own amusement. Nothing serious… I enjoy the company, the feeling of being wanted, being desired. I am one of the lucky few of my kind with enough control to enjoy this.

She was… disarming. I am not usually so drawn to a mortal woman, but she was so full of life. She was as elegant as a Roman princess, as witty as a Greek sophist, and a laugh that set me on fire.

As the night wore on I found myself wondering if I were experiencing blood lust for her. However no, this was a new feeling, something totally unexpected. Something I had only ever seen hints of over the centuries.

I don’t know if everyone has a soul mate. It took me many mortal lifetimes to find mine. But I know they exist.

I also know that what I was feeling was love. I know it because the next night, I told her what I was. I had never done that before, spoken the truth to a human. If it had been lust or infatuation I would have seen her a few more times and then would have disappeared into the night. But I told this one.

She didn’t believe me of course. But I had proof. It didn’t take long before she was running, screaming.

I followed her. I followed her always. I waited in the shadows watching her, even as she married, even as she started a family. I’d like to think that a part of her knew I was there, that maybe a part of her was fond of her pale shadow.

The greatest sign of my love is that I never turned her. Even at the end, as she lay there prone, helpless, passing beyond. I knew she would not want this. By then I knew her well. I understood her soul. She would have rather died.

And so she did, and I was left alone again, to wander the world in eternal, immortal loneliness.

Pattiyan the author of this new short online love story, allows the reader into her chartacter’s  life and shares her thoughts and feelings on the possibilities of what could be.

The reader is allowed to experience, not only the joy and excitement of the possibilities, but is also allowed to experience the actuality of the situation..

Even though the story is only 850 words, the feeling of what could be, places the reader into a zone of excitement and how true love gets introduced.  Yet, when things things don’t go like the fairy tail that we are use to, the reader is allowed to experience the disappointment as well.

For many readers, I am sure they will add their own thoughts to how the young girl could have made things turn out differently.  And isn’t that what a short story is suppose to do?  Wake us up, put us in the driver’s seat and allow us to think about what we could have done differently?

Pattiyan has displayed grace in writing a love story that so many of us can relate to.  It is no wonder that many women who read the story, shack their head and said, the same thing.  You have to read the story to understand the universal thoughts that most women have, after reading..

However, it does bring about the notion that when a woman makes that spiritual connection with a man, she may  need to provide a bookmarker in his life, so that he doesn’t forget.   The author shows us how we may loose out, if we don’t size the moment right when it happens.

When we diligently read our history books as part of our school’s curriculum, we learn about the famous men and women who earned their spot in print as world leaders, great businessmen, explorers, military heroes, or even criminals. While all aspects of history fascinate me, I must confess that my interest has always been more with the everyday folks who loved their families, took pride in their work, and, although they may never be studied in a classroom, made a lasting impact on the people who knew them. My ninety-eight-year-old grandmother has an amazing memory and can recount in detail an incident that happened with a playmate in 1917. She is also a musician who shares songs and piano melodies that remind her of being a teenager or raising her children during a war. I know from her that the retelling of family history and traditions is the best way to capture a picture of a bygone era. I have discovered a treasure that beautifully captures this appreciation for the warmth of family and home. The new audio book Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry & Music by Janet Riehl is a compilation of very personal music and poetry that is not to be missed.

Riehl’s audio book developed from her written text, Sightlines: A Poet’s Diary, which was published in 2006. With the new release, Riehl adds the elements of down-home music and her own voice bringing life to the poems she created. The musical component features her father’s singing and fiddle playing as he is joined by other musicians for recordings that took place in his living room. The fact that the music was not performed in a high-tech professional studio makes its inclusion even more appealing and appropriate. As you listen to old friends gather to play music, you feel so fortunate to be let into the intimate gathering. I felt that I should be sitting in a rocking chair with my eyes closed as I let the simple beauty fill my soul. Each piece provides a seamless transition for the subjects of the poems it connects.

The first section is devoted to her sister Julia (also known as Skeeter), who was tragically killed in a car crash several years ago. The emotional images Riehl creates through her words examine Julia’s work, her love of life, the moment of her death, and the longing of those she left behind. Riehl goes on to share equally captivating poetry about her father, her mother, and two places that have special meaning to her- the family home in Evergreen Heights and her later residence of Clear Lake in Northern California. Her words are straightforward, beautifully crafted, and offer a wonderful piece of storytelling.
